Therapists

We don't believe in seeing therapists. Its probably an attitude that we have developed over the years, but we have never liked nor trusted doctors. Partly it may be shaped by a time a time when we were approaching thirteen years old and had the dubious pleasure of six months in what would be now known as a CAMHS unit. The reason that we were put there was obsessional thoughts and behaviour at a level that it made everyday life very challenging. Our mother had us committed.

We had very little contact with our consultant whom we saw for about three one hour sessions over that entire time. This works out at about an hour every two months and could hardly be considered 'good therapy'! No diagnosis was ever made although we did have a diagnosis of OCD in later life.

Aside from our own experiences, our mother has been seeing psychiatrists for as long as we can remember and has made very little progress. Despite the feelings that we reserve for her, we feel strongly that the system has let her down badly. Some shrinks told her it was her unhappy marriage to my dad (Which she ended) or her second husband, or her father who had abused her. These people did very little to help her. This is why our opinion of therapists, psychiatrists etc is coloured.

In the united states there are few psychiatrists who believe in multiplicity. Of those that do there is not many who will accept multiplicity as a real situation, they will drag out the fragmented dissociation model and try and convince you that you need to have all your little shattered pieces fixed together again. When we came out to our mother as being multiple she said that from knowing us it made a lot of sense. She asked her psych at the time about it and the psych said that there was only one person in the UK who was multiple- at a time when we knew of several. We honestly don't know whether that is laughable or frightening.

"Just when I thought my life was rising,
The doctors left me here to die..."
Loudness, Crazy Doctor.
